[edit] New Academic Year IT School

[edit] Background

New Academic Year IT School builds on the foundation of "Catch IT Young" a project that provided computer skills to pre-tertiary schools in the Winneba and Apam districts of Ghana. It had 30pupils in each of the 12 schools - totaling 360; and had a teacher each - totaling 12 teachers. We used the existing school computer labs for the training. Teachers, who were patrons of the clubs and mentors were trained on weekends. They then passed on these skills and knowledge to the pupils.

[edit] Current Description

While the project under that name no longer exists, we have improved the quality and expanded it to be the New Academic Year IT School. This is annual training scheme between July - August each year in partnership with the National Tsing Hua University of Taiwan under the EcoTour Service and Learning Program.

Recently 10 National Tsing Hua University students traveled to Ghana for one month to get service learning experiences focusing on Information Development and Digital Philanthropy. Their activities included basic ICT training for junior high school students and their teachers at the Winneba Open Digital Village, a human capacity training and innovation & incubator center. The NTHU students recieved training from Prof Hung in Taiwan and introduced his OS USB system to the "digital accelerators" in the field - disseminating the OS concept and practices to the rural ICT center development.
